{ 2 }

Every now and then I like to do a post about Finley and what she's up to. I have been awful at keeping up with her baby book, so it's kind of a way for me to record important things. Now that she's a big two year old I've been meaning to do one, but keep putting it off. I really feel like my words can't possibly describe this super fun stage that she's in. I can't keep up with all the new things that she's learning or all the impossibly cute and hilarious things that come out of her mouth. So here is my attempt at capturing what brian and I feel has been "the best stage yet!"
Here are some of the things that come to mind when I think of the last few months with our daughter.

-she loves to sing. she likes to sing and she likes to be sung to. she wakes up singing, she sings in the car, and she sings up and down the aisles while we grocery shop. her favorite songs to sing are: jesus loves me, ho ho ho hosana, old macdonald, abc's, and "the hallelujah song". i could listen to her high little voice sing all day long...and i do.
-she loves her daddy. she squeals when he gets home in the evening and she loves, loves, LOVES waking up and finding out that it's a daddy stay home day. She loves to watch brian work on projects around the house and she even knows her way around his tool box. Seriously, we watched her use the dry wall scraper thingy on the walls exactly the right way. While brian works, she pops in to cheer him on, saying things like: "yay, daddy" "good job, daddy" "my playroom is sooooo pretty daddy". I'm second fiddle when daddy's home, which is just fine with me.

-she can't wait for her baby sister to come. she kisses my tummy all the time and tells me at least 20 times a day that she wants her baby sister to come over. She tells everyone and their brother (including the grocery store checker) that she is going to share her bed with her baby sister.

-Finley loves to show off! As I am getting more and more pregnant (aka lazy) we've been spending more time around the house. Finley is perfectly happy to have her audience sit on the couch while she sings, dances, and acts like a complete goof ball. Then she'll top it off by saying "i'm such a stinker" or "i'm a silly goose". The thing is, she really is funny. As in, ha-ha funny. She has us laughing all day long. In fact, I'm going to figure out a way to start documenting the hilarious things she says.

-As far as learning new things goes, I think any parent of a two year can agree that it's crazy how much their little brains soak up. She has mastered counting 1-12 and then it usually goes something like 12, 14, 19, 14. She knows all the main shapes and colors. What has surprised me is how quickly she is picking up letters. I'm going to try and get a video of this...but she knows 10 or so letters and what that letter is for. i.e. M is for mommy. D is for daddy. Y is for yogurt. And she points out letters all over the place. We'll be driving and she'll say "that's a y for yogurt" and sure enough she's looking at the old navY sign.

-she is getting really into girly things. this girl owns 5 tutu's, yes 5 tutus! and she loves to wear them around the house with her "nicknack's" (necklaces) and clip on earrings. she is very interested in watching me put on makeup (on the rare occasion that that happens). and she loves to put on yummy smelling lotion after her bath. Unfortunately, I put some shine stuff in her hair for a special occasion and now she wants me to do it all the time. Poor girl doesn't understand the concept of greasy hair yet. And why, oh why haven't i learned yet that i can't do something just once for a special reason without her asking for it again, every single day. Also, her baby dolls have been a big hit for a while now.

- she is basically potty trained when we're at home. Sometimes she goes potty when we're out and about or at other people's houses. But we still put her in a diaper when we leave the house because, well, i'm lazy and i'm not ready to deal with accidents in public yet. m&m's have been the perfect bribe, i mean reward, for getting her to use the toilet. a funny side note: a couple months ago she pointed to my sunroof and said, "what's that, mommy?" i said "oh, a bird pooped on the window" and she started clapping and said "yay birdy. good job. now you get m&m's". see what i mean about being hilarious?

-other random information: she is still a string bean (long and skinny). she LOVES stickers, loves sesame street (and frankly so do i), loves cottage cheese more than life itself, she loves to "make a tent" in our bed and have a sing a long with us under the covers, she enjoys anything to do with animals, she is the most amazing sleeper, she loves to praise the lord-and the little stinker has even figured out that saying "i wanna praise the lord more" allows her to stay up for a few extra minutes, she loves to be the center of attention and she has recently started telling brian and i "no talking" when we're focused on each other and not her (thank goodness a sibling is on the way!!).

So that's finley in a nutshell, a veeeery long nutshell. i had no idea this would turn into such a long post. if you're still reading you are a very patient friend!

Here is her first haircut done by a professional. I gave her what can only be described as "the worst mom haircut you've ever seen", just days before her birthday party. thankfully it was fixable.
here she is picking out her big girl underwear. she calls them her "unders" and we think it's so cute we don't bother correcting her.

of course she choose the elmo ones!

farewell, brown

This weekend Brian started on a project in Finley's room to transition it from baby room to big girl room. While we're making the switch I decided that the brown walls needed to go and we needed something lighter and softer. You know, needed! We've loved the brown, but for such a small room with small windows it probably isn't the greatest choice.

So, Brian literally worked all weekend putting up the board and batten wainscoting and painting the walls. The paint sprayer turned out to be his bestfriend and worst enemy. He had to do a gazillion thin coats in order to keep the paint from running. He even woke up at 5 am on monday to do one last coat so finley could be back in her room that day! The last few mornings when I go in to to get Finley the first thing she says is, "it's my new pink room! it's so cute! thank you, daddy". I couldn't have said it better myself. THANK YOU, BABE!

He took these pictures at night, so it's sort of hard to see the detail and the pink looks a little off (it's not such a blue pink) but you get the idea. still have to paint her new door white...

and here we are at a fun little animal farm. we didn't capture many great pictures because finley was a little under the weather.
Okay, now this was seriously entertaining! all the sudden these goats climbed up on these tables and posed. They stood perfectly still for a LONG time. They must be some sort of show goats that have been trained to pose for pictures or something.
and ps, spell check isn't working.

halloween

Go ahead and judge me for saying this...our family isn't really that into halloween. I just couldn't bring myself to spend any money on a costume so we dressed her up in something she already had. If I do say so, I think she made a rather cute little ballerina (even if she wouldn't leave on her ballet slippers). Instead of taking her trick or treating we decorated plates of sugar cookies and took them to some of our friends in the neighborhood. At night we stayed home and enjoyed seeing all the kids (um, and adults) come to our door. Every time the door bell rang, Finley screamed "my friends are here!!".

finley turns 2

Last week our little girl turned 2! On her actual birthday I asked her what she wanted to do to celebrate. She chose to go to the water park but since that's impossible, her next choice was to go to the pet store. Very exciting, I know. The mice are her very favorite. Kinda creepy, huh.

We were going out for ice cream that night, and since candles don't really work with an ice cream cone, she got a candle in her tofu.
The following weekend we got to celebrate her birthday with family and friends and lots of pink fluff.
birthday treats

the birthday girl got her own special jumbo cupcake.

party favors
the world's cutest banner that Hillary let us borrow-thanks!
luckily i captured lots of pictures of the birthday girl before the party, because once it started i basically got nothing.
she insisted on wearing her pearl necklace.

finley says, "that's my number two. my mommy maaaaaade it. it's so pretty mommy". we might leave it up a little longer.

not sure who ate more treats before the party, brian or finley.

the sneaky little girl somehow managed to get her hands on these without anyone noticing. but it was so cute i let her have one.

for about 2 hours finley was the proud owner of a kitty. but, we had to send this gift back with grandma...

jubilee farm

Last weekend we went out to Jubilee Farm to visit a friend to who lives and works on the farm. Even though it was FREEZING, we had the best day checking out the farm. I would totally recommend this place to anyone looking for a good pumpkin patch because there was so much to do and see (for free).

searching for the perfect pumpkin. hmmmmmm

maybe this one?

or this one?

maybe i can carry this one.

i think this is it!

family photo attempt 1.
the best part was the hay rides from the barn to the patch. our friend was driving so we stayed on for several rides.

feeding the pigs some corn.

checking out the chickens, roosters and turkey.

family photo attempt 2

and 3.

hanging out at the barn.

going through the hay maze.

we better go that way.

cuteness

You probably can't imagine anything cuter than this janie and jack knit dress we picked up for finley, right?how about one for finley and baby sister?

i should not be allowed in that store. it's dangerous. my eyes were darting around the store eyeing things for finley and then for the baby and then for finley and then....ohmygosh. look at that little suit for a boy. do i have any need for a little pinstripe suit. Thank goodness I don't. I will tell you that our birthday girl will be decked out in the cutest little "happy birthday skirt"-her words, not mine.
*the pictures don't do the dresses justice.
** i don't plan on dressing my girls in matching outfits on a regular basis
***don't worry. all items were purchased from the sale rack.

{ pictures }

These are some photos from the last month, or maybe even longer. It already seems crazy that we were just wearing tank tops! She's really into wearing these sunglasses. She asks for them all the time when "it's soooo bright! i need my gasses". Last week we made a fire, which was so bright she needed to wear her glasses.

At our very favorite park feeding the ducks.

i love this picture! such excitement.

no better sight to wake up to.

She's also gotten really into dressing up and wearing accessories. Her tutu and necklaces have become an everyday fashion statement. Luckily, she has this really cute apron so she can be just like mama when we're baking.

I must have had my camera on a weird setting, since these turned out so blurry. But the moment was just so cute I had to post them anyway. Not so much because she was wearing her daddy's work boots, but because she would not stop laughing and acting so proud of herself for being so funny. She loves to be silly and make us laugh.

mean girls

Brian and I have always said that we would love to have a whole clan of girls. Even though we know it's not true, we discuss how nice it would be to never have to deal with some of the "boy issues", especially in adolescence. Today, I was hit with one of those moments where i realized man, this is a really sucky thing about being a girl/raising girls.

mean girls.

We were in the play area at the mall and it was empty except for two older girls (probably 4ish). It started out that they were chasing Finley around. All the girls were laughing and having fun. When they stopped the "chase game" I heard the ring leader tell Finley she couldn't follow them, she wasn't invited, and that she didn't have a ticket. "Go away", she said. Finley had no idea what that meant and she just kept running around after them. I'm sitting there wondering what's worse: that they're being so mean to her, or that she's totally clueless and thinks she's made some new best friends.

A few minutes later, Finley sort of backs away into a little hiding spot. I think to myself that she must be pooping (because the girl likes her privacy). I watch the older girls run over and make fun of her for pooping and tease her about it being stinky. It broke my heart. I swooped in and took off the bathroom. For a long while, I just couldn't shake off how upsetting the whole scene was. Thankfully, Finley had no idea what was going on, and she kept asking to go back and play with the other kids.

In no time though she will understand when she's being teased or left out. And she will undoubtedly have hurt feelings. I just hope and pray that as we deal with this more regularly, God will lead Brian and to figure out how the heck to deal with this issue. How to protect our children, how to teach that we must love our enemies, how to raise girls that are kind and loving. And how we as their parents can deal with the anger and sadness that comes from watching encounters like we had today. (I'd be lying if I didn't admit that I was thinking not nice thoughts about the two girls, and also their mom and dad- who both had their noses buried in their blackberries).

I know I'm getting a little ahead of myself here. But, for some reason this issue just really strikes a cord in me. I wasn't ever bullied per se, but i can remember certain times throughout my childhood where I felt left out, and I just desperately wanted to be included. And as hurtful and upsetting as it was to me as a middle schooler, I think it's going to be even worse when it happens to my babies.

party prep

This week my mom and I got together to make Finley's birthday invitations and plan out some party details. Brian and I are trying to keep things small and simple this year, but I just couldn't let her birthday go down without a little pink and cuteness. Thanks so much for all your help, mom. Can't wait to see our ideas come together for her big day!

granola

so, a while ago i stumbled upon this recipe for granola. this recipe is soooo good that i really had to convince brian that I in fact made it. it is so good that we don't just eat it for breakfast (with yogurt) but also for dessert too. I think that if we're going to continue eating it like it's going out of style, I just might have to tweak the recipe slightly to make it a smidge more healthy. or not. cause it's sooooo good. oh, and easy. here's the recipe:

6 cups oats
3/4 cup honey
1/2 cup canola oil
1/2 tsp salt
1-2 Tbs cinnamon
2 Tbs vanilla
1 cup coconut
1 cup craisins or raisins (we do craisins)
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup chopped nuts (both almonds and pecans are yummy)
1/2 cup flax seed (if you want to make it healthier)

all you have to do is throw it all in a big bowl. mix it really good. spray a cookie sheet and bake it on 375 for 10-15 minutes. I do 10 minutes because i like it chewy. and it's that easy.

my conversation with finley

this morning i heard finley playing in our closet so i opened the door.

me: what are you doing in here?
finley: i'm pooping mommy.
me: okay, lets go change your diaper.
finley: no. just pee. just pee.
me: hmmmm. what's that smell then?

as we're walking to her room.

finley: {laughing hysterically} i'm tricking you. i'm tricking you! my poop so tiny. my poop so hard. {more laughing}

seriously, i couldn't come up with this stuff if i tried. such a silly little trickster.

our first project

I just sat down to upload some pictures from the last few weeks, but something went wrong and the pictures got lost. I can't find them anywhere, and they automatically delete from my camera. I've made it this far in my pregnancy without shedding a single hormonal tear, but that's all it took. There were some really cute ones!!! I'm hoping my computer savvy husband can work a miracle! So since those pics are gone, I thought I'd post a picture of one of our first home projects, and give my amazing husband a shout out!!
This area is in the hallway between the kitchen/dining room, finley's room, and the stairway to the downstairs. It used to have upper cabinets and then just an empty space below. Naturally, the space below became an area where we piled up junk. It wasn't working and it certainly wasn't cute, so we put in some lower cabinets and upper shelving and now we have a space that is so amazing. Seriously, this little space has become a lifesaver. It has our computer, mail and bill organizer, decorating stuff, extra kitchen appliances, finley's coloring stuff. you name it. and if we ever have a big party we can clear it off and use it as a buffet for serving since it's right off the dining room. i love it and i LOVE my husband for improving our house one project at a time!

**i'm hoping this post will help brian feel extra loved and appreciated as he is on the last stretch of painting our upstairs and feeling a smidge "over" these projects.

one of my favorite mommy blogs

When we were remodeling our kitchen i somehow stumbled upon this kitchen re-do. I got hooked and spent a ridiculous amount of time looking through her blog. She is a REALLY cute mom of 7 REALLY cute little kids. Yeah you read that right. 7! She is a Christian and writes all about her faith and mommyhood, and I think you should get hooked on it too. resolved2worship
